As a naturalized American citizen, I have a particular appreciation for the First Amendment and the uniquely robust protections it provides for speech, association, religious liberty, political advocacy, satire, and dissent. These protections are not universal, even among democratic nations, and they deserve vigilant defense as new technologies and new political pressures create fresh calls for regulation.
Legislators and regulators are increasingly being asked to address concerns related to social media, artificial intelligence, online content, misinformation, deepfakes, age verification requirements, and digital platforms. While many of these concerns are real, there is often a temptation to pursue regulatory solutions without fully considering their constitutional implications or their unintended consequences for lawful speech.
Government should address genuine harms without restricting the free exchange of ideas. Regulations aimed at combating fraud, threats, or other unlawful conduct must be carefully distinguished from efforts that burden protected speech, anonymous expression, satire, political advocacy, or lawful online activity.
As emerging technologies transform how people communicate, create, and access information, policymakers will face difficult questions about how to balance innovation, privacy, safety, and constitutional freedoms. Those debates deserve careful analysis rather than rushed legislation driven by headlines or moral panic.
I closely follow legislative efforts across the country involving online speech, content moderation, artificial intelligence, platform regulation, age-verification requirements, and related First Amendment issues. And I help clients evaluate, develop, and advance policies affecting free expression, digital speech, emerging technologies, and constitutional rights—ensuring that efforts to address legitimate concerns do not come at the expense of the uniquely American commitment to free expression embodied in the First Amendment.
